Cork oak woodlands are under threat from climate change and lack of management.

Cork Oaks

Cork Oak is a native Mediterranean tree that can live for hundreds of years. Generations of families near Cork Oak woodlands have lived off harvesting the bark of cork trees. Its bark is harvested multiple times throughout the tree’s life without felling the tree. Because of the bark’s many qualities, it is used as bottle stoppers in the wine industry and building material in the real estate industry.

Currently, Cork Oak population is dwindling because of drought, disease, old age and deforestation, which causes supply of cork to decline. Quercus Suber Heritage is fighting declining Cork Oak population by planting more trees in a sustainable manner.
